Frequently Asked Questions

How does AI food recognition work?
When you photograph a meal, the photo is sent to our server-side AI processing service where OpenAI Vision identifies the foods and estimates portions and nutritional content. The results are returned to the app where you can review and correct them. OpenAI does not retain your images for training.
How does barcode scanning work?
Point your camera at a product barcode. Lumeal looks up nutrition from Open Food Facts and FatSecret. If not found, use AI recognition or manual search.
Is my data private and secure?
Lumeal uses a local-first architecture — all data is stored on your device first. If you sign in, data syncs to Supabase with row-level security so only you can access it. We never sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How do I manage my subscription?
Lumeal Pro is available as a monthly or annual auto-renewing subscription with a 7-day free trial. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your iPhone's Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions. Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
How does HealthKit integration work?
With your permission, Lumeal reads active energy burned (exercise calories), step count, and body mass (weight) from Apple Health, and writes logged meal nutrition data (calories, protein, carbs, fat, fiber, sodium) back to Apple Health. HealthKit data is never stored on our servers or shared with third parties. Weight syncing from HealthKit is an opt-in toggle in Settings. You can revoke permissions at any time via iOS Settings.
How does weight tracking work?
Log weight manually or import from Apple Health. View progress chart and goal distance in the Analytics tab. Delete entries via swipe or context menu.
How do water reminders work?
Set daily water goal and reminder interval in Settings. Lumeal sends periodic reminders during active hours. Track glasses on the Dashboard.
How do smart food swaps work?
After logging a meal, tap a food item to see AI-suggested healthier alternatives that fit your goals.
Can I save favorite meals?
Yes. Save logged meals as favorites for quick re-logging later.
How do widgets work?
Add Lumeal widgets via long-press Home Screen > Edit. Available: calorie ring, quick log, daily progress.
Can I use Lumeal offline?
Yes. Lumeal uses a local-first architecture, so all your data is stored on your device. You can view your dashboard, meal history, and logs without an internet connection. AI food recognition, barcode lookup, and cloud sync require an internet connection, but you can log meals manually offline.
How do I export my data?
Go to Settings > Data Export. You can export your food logs, weight logs, and water logs in CSV format with date range filtering, or export all your data as a single JSON file. Exported files can be shared or saved using the iOS share sheet.
Is Lumeal a substitute for medical advice?
No. Lumeal is not a medical device. AI-generated nutrition information is an estimate only. Calorie and macro estimates are approximations and should not be relied upon for medical dietary needs. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional or registered dietitian for medical nutrition therapy, food allergies, eating disorders, or other health conditions.

Troubleshooting

AI food recognition is inaccurate or not working

Ensure your photo is well-lit and clearly shows the food. Try taking the photo from directly above the plate. If recognition is inaccurate, you can correct the results manually — tap on any food item to edit it. You can also use the manual search feature to find foods in the USDA database. AI recognition requires an internet connection.

Barcode not recognized

Not all products are in the database. Ensure good lighting and full barcode visibility. Fall back to AI recognition or manual search if the product is not found.

Data is not syncing across devices

Make sure you are signed in with the same account on both devices. Check your internet connection. Try pulling down to refresh. If the issue persists, try signing out and back in via Settings.

HealthKit permissions are not working

Go to iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Lumeal and ensure the required permissions are enabled. If Lumeal does not appear in the Health settings, try toggling the permissions off and on within the Lumeal app settings.

Weight not syncing from HealthKit

Check iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Lumeal and ensure Body Mass read permission is enabled. Also verify that the weight sync toggle is turned on in the Lumeal app Settings.

Subscription is not activating or restoring

Make sure you have an active internet connection. Try tapping "Restore Purchases" in the app's subscription settings. If the issue persists, check your subscription status in iPhone Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions. For refund requests, contact Apple directly.
